Slingshot Wakeboards

Friend2Friend develops a user generated design contest that starts on an enthusiast website and propagates designs to Facebook, extending a focused community’s creations to millions of Facebook users and their friends.

Background

Wakesites is an online community for wakeboarding and wakeskating, two of the fastest-growing action sports for over a decade. Built for riders, by riders, Wakesites provides a place for companies that believe in these sports to show their products and services and interact directly with wake enthusiasts.

Slingshot Sports is a wakeboard manufacturer catering to top wakeboarders in the world, and a sponsor of Wakesites. Together, these companies wanted to create an exciting and innovative internet marketing campaign that would reach beyond the enthusiast community on Wakesites and tap the viral potential of 175 million users on Facebook.

Objectives

  1. Engage advocates on Wakesites to create branded wakeboard designs
  2. Provide maximum marketing power for the brand sponsor
  3. Create visibility and voter participation beyond the enthusiast community
  4. Use social media marketing to be consistent with Slingshot’s innovative image

Results

Friend2Friend designed and implemented a user generated design contest with an interactive presence on both WakeSites.com and Facebook. Wakeboard enthusiasts already participating on Wakesites.com could submit designs and vote through an iframe.

Those designs were immediately visible on Friend2Friend’s Product Pulse application on Facebook, exposing them to tens of thousands of Facebook users and their friends. Through this approach, Slingshot was able to get the best of both worlds—participation from wake enthusiasts who visit WakeSites.com and broader marketing and engagement on Facebook.

By the end of the campaign more than 130 designs were submitted, almost 35 thousand Facebook users interacted with the designs and Slingshot received more than 13 million of social impressions. And at the same time, Friend2Friend helped bring several sites together…connecting people and Slingshot across social media.
